Wow! What an amazing interview from an amazing woman. Taren Guy is a phenomenal YouTube vlogger with over 16 million views worldwide! Her vlogs take you through a journey of her natural hair process. As she documents her own experience, her journey is one of delight and inspiration. Currently Ms. Guy is hosting her "Luv & Learn Your Hair" Tour. Traveling 12 cities nationwide in which my hometown Chicago was on the list. During hair time in Chicago I was blessed with the opportunity to sit down and talk to Taren Guy for a one on one interview. Catch Part 1 of the interview below: FEbyJB: So have you ever been to Chicago? TG: No. This is my fist time. FEbyJB: This is your first time here?
Yea. And I'm like oh I'm from New York it's like a mini New York a little bit. Yea it has that vibe!
Wow so are you going to stay for a little bit longer or do you have to leave?
No, I'm leaving tomorrow morning.
What's the next stop on the tour?
Houston
What inspired you to start vlogging about your natural hair?
It was just my natural curiosity about my natural hair and I like connecting with people. So just connecting and sharing and wanting to know. I think all of that mixed together is what kind of created videos.
Ok awesome! So do you have like a background or certification in hairstyling or anything?
Absolutely not! No no, I have a social worker degree. With that I took a little bit of media art in college. Was a makeup artist when I graduated. Didn't even dip and dabble in the social (worker field). So, no, I had absolutely nothing to do with hair.
Amazing! Now I've watched your videos and saw when you started off with your BIG CHOP and it was very short. For you, and I know you talk about learning your own type of hair, how long did it take for your hair to get where it is now? How long was that process?
Two years! Yes, July 2011 is when I chopped all the damaged hair off to two inches and now it's this long, however many inches it is right now!
Beautiful! Now in 2011, is that when you started vlogging?
Oh no! I started vlogging in 2009 but I was already natural it was just damaged because I flat ironed so much. So I was trying to get my curls back. They were a little limp and I was like I don't this. Let me just start all over! Stay tuned for Part 2 of the interview with Taren Guy! Peace OUT...
